144Hz and 240Hz: refresh is not a promised frame rate

A display refresh rate and an application's rendered frame rate describe different parts of the experience. Neither alone establishes input lag or motion quality.

Read the mode and its connection

A refresh label needs a resolution and an input connection. A monitor can support different limits over different ports, and its available mode can depend on the cable and source device. Check the exact monitor's instructions for the intended combination. Do not carry a headline mode across every input or treat an EDID observation as a universal maximum.

Keep timing concepts separate

The interval associated with a refresh rate is 1000 divided by Hz in milliseconds. That arithmetic is not a measurement of total input lag, pixel response or game render time. A faster advertised refresh also does not guarantee that your game supplies enough frames for it. Use appropriate tests to compare those subjects and avoid a one-number latency claim based on refresh alone.

A practical choice needs actual use

Identify the games or applications, connection and resolution you intend to use. Verify that mode in the manufacturer's support material, then check the actual system settings after installation. RigPrism's monitor comparison displays known source fields without inventing a motion-quality winner. Unknown response time or panel technology remains unknown; use the guide links and original source to make a focused checklist instead of filling those gaps with assumptions.

Your check before choosing parts

  • Check Hz at the intended resolution and port.
  • Separate refresh, response time and input lag.
  • Verify the installed system's actual mode.
