Modular PSU cables: never choose by plug shape alone

A detachable cable needs compatibility with the exact power supply. Similar-looking PSU-side plugs do not establish an interchangeable pinout.

The PSU end is model-specific

Seasonic warns that modular cables can differ across brands, series and models. Treat the cable and PSU as an exact pair. A GPU-side or drive-side connector name does not describe every connection at the PSU end. Keep the original cables identified when storing parts, and use the manufacturer's compatibility list when replacing a cable.

Make upgrades a fresh compatibility check

Replacing a PSU while retaining old cables is a different task from keeping the whole PSU unchanged. Look up each cable type against both the replacement PSU model and the intended device connection. Do not treat an attractive cable set or a familiar brand name as proof. If the compatibility evidence is unclear, stop that part of the build and ask the PSU maker.

Record the evidence with your build

Use the builder's manual checks to note the exact PSU and cable documentation. RigPrism does not infer cable pinouts from a wattage label or generic connector count. This remains important even when the total power estimate looks comfortable. Consult the manufacturer's installation instructions for connection and handling; a catalog table is not a substitute for those instructions or a reason to experiment with an undocumented cable.

Your check before choosing parts

  • Use the exact PSU compatibility list.
  • Identify each retained or replacement cable.
  • Do not infer pinouts from connector shape.
